AI and the Future of Fiber Optics

AI technology is progressing at an increasingly rapid rate, shifting the way business is done and information is processed. The fiber optic field is no different and will see many changes as AI continues to become more prevalent. Here are a few ways that fiber optics will be affected by the rise of AI:

AI efficiency is largely dependent on fiber optics quality. As AI evolves at an exponential rate, it is crucial that fiber remains a competitive market. This includes everything from research and development to mass production and dispersion of new and improved products.

The ultra-fast data exchange provided by fiber optic cables supports demanding applications such as cloud computing and AI integrations. Fiber optics cables are used for these server-to-server connections, especially for high-performance computing clusters and storage networks within data centers.

The continual demand that comes with AI is creating new jobs, causing rapid workplace growth. However, this growing workforce means nothing if people don’t know how to complete the tasks presented to them with both competency and efficiency. This means hands-on training has never been more needed. AI is only as effective as the real people working in the fiber optics industry, and proactively seeking ways to bring more technicians into the field will be a way to stay ahead of the game.

With AI holding such an important role in the future of industrial development, fiber optics holds the same level of importance because of AI’s dependence on it to function successfully. It is expected that over the next ten years, the optical fiber market will jump nearly $5 billion in value.

UCL Swift is on the forefront of fiber optic technology with our impressive suite of All-In-One Splicers and dedication to workforce (and especially in-person) training. We are excited for what’s coming and look forward to walking hand in hand into the future of fiber optics together.

Welcome to Our Team

UCL Swift recently welcomed some fantastic team members. We’re lucky to have them aboard. If you haven’t met them, we hope you get a chance to. Here’s a quick introduction to these fine folks:

UCL Swift is pleased to introduce Larry Gerst, a seasoned professional with more than 38 years of experience in the communications industry, as our new Western Regional Sales Manager. His wealth of knowledge, exceptional leadership, and expertise in driving sales growth while building strong customer relationships will bolster our team.

Larry’s impressive track record of success, spanning 18 years at Preformed Line Products Inc., is a testament to his capabilities. He spearheaded numerous initiatives and spec designs for military and civilian communication projects, showcasing his strategic thinking, extensive knowledge base and hands-on approach. We are fortunate to have him on our team as we strive to expand our Swift-FX small-form factor FTTH product line.

We are confident that Larry will be an excellent fit for the UCL Swift family. He is eager to start working with the Broadband team, bringing fresh perspectives and innovative strategies to help us achieve our goals.

UCL Swift is proud to announce a new member of our team, Tom Hall. Tom is a 30-plus-year industry veteran. He began his career in telecommunications in the United States Army and brings with him a wealth of technical, problem-solving and customer-facing experience. Tom’s role will be Technical Sales Engineer.

Tom has worked in the manufacturing segment of the industry as a Product Engineer, Technical Support Manager and Technical Field Engineer supporting Digital Video, RF and Optical product lines. In those positions, he was in product management, developed training, and built lesson plans and instructional and training materials. Tom was also involved and responsible for all regulatory documentation.

Outside of manufacturing, Tom worked for Comcast and C-COR Networks, where he was a Headend Technician, managing plant upgrades in the HFC ecosystems and honing his fiber termination skills. Most recently, Tom was with SRI Telecom/Comcast as a construction coordinator, where he was responsible for EPON and HFC market expansion and was heavily involved in the design, building and implementation of major projects in PA.
